Biography

Over the course of his 15+ years of career stint in Rural & Agri Insurance domain, Balachandran was instrumental in the launch of index-based crop insurance and other micro insurance products along with implementation of several innovative technology-based insurance solutions in the rural insurance for Indian market.

He has a bachelor’s degree in technology specializing in Dairy Science and Technology, post which he completed his Post Graduate Diploma in Rural Management from the Institute of Rural Management Anand (IRMA), which is a premier management institute for Rural Management. Over the years, he could establish himself as an expert in the rural and Agri Insurance domain with a decade long experience in managing multiple portfolios in the Indian market.

He has worked with two well-known general insurance companies in India and has helped them in setting up their rural insurance distribution reach from the scratch. He comes with a hands own experience in managing various crop insurance programs in the Indian market. He was instrumental in the launch of weather-based crop insurance for his company way back in 2009.

He was also the lead in developing innovative tech-based distribution network for low ticket size products which currently has a reach of more than 44,000 active touch points at various nook and corner of the country providing online insurance solutions to the rural community, and includes online Kiosks, Micro Finance Institutions, FPOs, Agri techs, NBFCs, Business Correspondents, Cooperative Societies, Cooperative Banks and Micro Insurance agents.

His competencies include, clear understanding and knowledge of index based and parametric insurance products, experience in managing channel partners, and expertise in setting up new business with innovation and technology assisted models that are scalable and sustainable.
