Biography

Abdullah Al Mamun is a Senior Research Analyst in the Markets, Trade and Institutions Division based in Washington, DC. His research interests include economic modeling, trade in agriculture and farm support policies, poverty, and household welfare. He analyzes household welfare models for poverty impact of shocks such as weather, trade policy changes, and investment in R&D. His recent paper ‘Impact of Farm Subsidies on Global Agricultural Productivity’ was published in Agriculture Economics. Abdullah is a coauthor of ‘Agricultural subsidies and global greenhouse gas emissions’ published in Nature Communications. He co-authored several blog posts on the issue of global concern for food security in the aftermath of Russia-Ukraine crisis, published internally at IFPRI and republished externally in different news daily. His other major work involves harmonizing and consolidating databases on price distortions and subsidies in agriculture, sourcing from various multilateral organizations.

Prior to joining IFPRI, Abdullah worked in the World Bank Group, where he was involved in several evaluations that used randomized control trials and other evaluation methods. He routinely uses R for advanced statistical analysis and MySQL for data processing. He is a Bangladeshi citizen and holds an MS in Economics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Untied States.

This session, aimed at policymakers, governmental bodies, and academic circles, is designed to spotlight innovative tools developed by the Food Security Portal team at the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) for analyzing and monitoring food security dynamics. This project is a response to the critical need for rapid assessment tools that emerged prominently during the 2007-2008 food crisis and was underscored during subsequent global challenges, such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the Ukraine crisis. The session underscores the pivotal role of technology and data in addressing food security vulnerabilities and enhancing resilience against global market and weather shocks.
